Quiet Heaters
Space heaters have come a long way since the time when they were noisy, unstable on carpeted floors, and a fire hazard. Today’s space heaters are much quieter and compact. Some models of quiet heaters can be hung on the wall, and look like Lego toys.
Quiet Heaters
There are several types of heaters that are quiet and very affordable for the rooms or spaces that require additional heat. There are a number of reasons why a home might need supplemental space heaters. Some homes or apartments have heat that does not reach particular rooms, due to not being able to adequately channel the heating vents evenly to all rooms. Some rooms are nice and warm, while others seem cold no matter how the heating vents are channeled. These are the rooms that require ancillary heating systems.
Space heaters are generally safe due to federal regulations and requirements. Manufacturers have to ensure that the heaters are stable on all types of flooring, do not tip over, and are generally safe around children and pets. Space heaters can also be used as supplemental heat to keep the furnace at a lower temperature setting. The heaters designed today are much more energy efficient and do not significantly increase electricity costs when in use.
Heaters can also be used to heat cold spots in a room. Putting the heater near the feet if there is a draft close to the floor can keep the feet warm while the rest of the body remains comfortable in a room. This can eliminate having to turn up the heat in the whole house when only one area needs the additional heat.
Convection Space Heaters
Convection space heaters do not have fans to blow heated air through the room. While they are very quiet, they can be slow to heat spaces. These heaters come in a variety of styles and work through by using a heat liquid, such as oil, that is heated by an electric element in the heater. The heat liquid is stored in the system and does not require replacing or refilling, similar to an oil-filled radiator. This heating system provides a steady, constant heat that will not cycle off and on. These oil-filled heaters are recommended by the United States Department of Energy as the best types of convection heaters.
Convection heaters should be used in rooms that require heat for a longer period of time, rather than just require the quick heating of a space temporarily. This is because the heaters are slow to warm the room, but once the room is the desired temperature the heat remains constant.
The oil convection heaters provide quiet heat, but can be heavy. They are very stable and some models come with handles and casters that make them easy to roll from room to room. The oil-filled space heaters can get hot, so should be kept away from children. These types of heaters can give off a smell for the first few hours of use.
Another type of convection heater is the micathermic flat panel heaters. These are flat screens that use mineral mica as the warming element. The micathermic heaters come in models that can be hung on the wall or stand upright. The operation of this type of convection heater does well when rated for ease of use, noise and safety. But it is also slow to reach the desired temperature to heat the room, nor does it come with temperature displays or a timer. The micathermic heaters do not have oil-filled features so there is no risk of leaking oil, and users say it is quicker in getting a room warm.
Wall Mounted Heaters
Quiet heaters can actually look like works of art hanging on a wall. The quiet heaters are slim and trim and look stylish on the wall, not at all like a space heater. These wall-mounted electric panel heaters may look artistic but can save on heating bills. The heating panels are ecological friendly and hypoallergenic. The do not have any moving parts or fans. The convection design makes the heater safe. The heater does not get hot to the touch and will turn off if removed from the wall or if the heating vents are blocked for any reason.
The design of the heater prevents cracks from forming on the casing and some models have the cords hidden inside the unit. A person can sleep comfortably with the heater on and not worry about dangerous fire conditions as the heater will automatically turn off when the desired temperature is reached. Units come with auto-dimmers so that the light from the unit does not keep the person using it awake. Since there is no fan, dust or other allergens are not spread throughout the room.
While these heaters are safe to leave on throughout the day and night, it probably would not be recommended to leave on in a child’s room. Even if wall mounted the potential, no matter how slim, of an accident should warrant extra care around children.
One Italian company even produces wall-mounted heaters that actually look like Legos hanging on the wall.
Quiet Heaters Manufacturers
There are several reputable manufacturers of all types of quiet heaters. Heaters that come with thermostat controls and various heat settings will allow the user to control the heat output. Units that turn off when the heat setting is reached will save on energy. The unit should be made of ceramic or other casings that do not become hot to the touch, even though the heater should never be moved when it is turned on. Forced air heaters will be more efficient at heating the room quickly, but the ceramic and micathermic heaters provide quiet heat that maintains even warmth.
Consumers Report rates various models and manufacturers of these heaters very highly. The noise reduction is beneficial to the family, but some are so quiet that timers that turn them off automatically might be necessary. Even heaters with fans are now made to be very quiet.
There are smaller, forced-air propane cordless heaters that are amazingly quiet and will heat a space for up to eight hours on a rechargeable battery. These heaters are often used on construction sites and will provide comfort at tailgates and other outdoor gatherings.
Any cold spot or cold room in a house can benefit from the noiseless quiet heat units. While they may not heat larger spaces efficiently, they are perfect for most 12x12 rooms in a home. Always use space heaters safely and never leave them on when leaving the home for any reason.
