Lasko Heaters

Advantages of Lasko Heaters

When selecting a space heater for the home, many models are an eyesore to look at. Some homeowners report that they feel compelled to hide the space heater when guests arrive! Those seeking a more attractive design will be pleased by some of the models offered by Lasko, and there are many other advantages of Lasko heaters.

Digital Delight

Lasko heaters are a dream come true for people who enjoy the latest technology. In addition to the digital thermostat that most units have, Lasko heaters frequently come with a built-in timer. Lasko is one of the only brands in its price range to offer a remote control for their space heaters, an excellent idea that enhances the convenience of using a space heater. The display panels are frequently LED panels which provide for a very user-friendly interface.

Quiet Operation

One of the advantages of Lasko heaters is that most models have features to promote quiet operation. Noise is one of the primary complaints that buyers of other brands have, and Lasko models tend to be quieter even at normal settings. At the quieter settings, the heaters are sometimes so quiet that a person in the same room can't even hear the heater.

Rapid Heating of the Unit

When the heater is plugged in and turned on, it heats up quite rapidly. Some models from other manufacturers take a long time to heat up, which can be a tremendous inconvenience when the homeowner is waiting in a cold room for the heater to start producing heat.

Can Use It Against a Wall

Most Lasko heater models can be placed directly along a wall. Unlike some other competitors, the air intake for most Lasko heaters is not on the front or back of the unit, but on the top or the bottom. The result is that many Lasko heaters can be safely used flush against a wall so that they are out of the way. Space heaters that must be kept a fair distance from a wall can pose a tripping hazard, either over the machine itself or over the cord; this tripping hazard can be extremely dangerous for children or the elderly, and Lasko heaters are far safer when they are placed out of the way along the wall – this is perhaps one of the most important advantages of Lasko heaters.

Easy to Assemble and Move

Lasko heaters are easy to assemble. Most models can be assembled in minutes using a few screws. Once assembled, the units are lightweight and easy to move from room to room. With handles on the unit for easy carrying, sharing a heater between multiple rooms is simple. Because of their lightweight design and ease of portability, Lasko heaters can be safely stored away during summer months without taking up a lot of room or presenting great difficulty in transporting the heaters to and from storage.

Lasko heaters are priced comparably to other similar models, but they offer space heaters in a wide range of prices and designs. Given the advantages of Lasko heaters, they can easily become a great way to assist a central heating system when the temperature drops.

Disadvantages of Lasko Heaters

Lasko heaters are beautiful, stylish, and high tech. They offer many features that other brands are lacking, and they have a great price range. As with any heater purchase though, there are also disadvantages of Lasko heaters to consider.

High Price Compared to Similar Models

Lasko heaters are not excessively expensive, but their prices are higher than similar models from other brands. For example, the Lasko 5570 Digital Ceramic Tower Heater retails for 19% more than the Holmes HCH6150-U Ceramic Tower Heater. While the prices are still comparable to competitor's similar models, the Lasko prices do tend to be slightly higher when comparing similar features. This may be a result of Lasko's focus on design and digital operation.

No Tipover Shutoff Feature

One of the key disadvantages to Lasko heaters is that most models don’t have a feature that will automatically shut off the unit if it tips over. This can present a serious safety problem, as the units themselves tend to be top-heavy and prone to tipping. While this may not be a problem for some households, households with pets or small children may find Lasko heaters unsafe. If a pet or child accidentally knocks the heater over, it will continue to heat. Considering how hot the Lasko units can become, if the unit falls onto anything combustible (clothing, carpet, magazines or newspapers, etc.), it can spark a fire in a short time. This unit should never be left unattended, especially if children or pets are in the home.

Cannot Adequately Heat a Room

The Lasko units become very hot to the touch. If standing directly in front of them, they can seem to put off a lot of heat. Unfortunately, the Lasko units do a very poor job of sending that warm air into the room. This may be a tradeoff, as Lasko fans are quieter than most other manufacturers; it seems that Lasko's fans are less effective at pushing warm air into the room, and rooms are heated inadequately as a result. This disadvantage of Lasko heaters might differ from model to model, but should be kept in mind.

Electrical Problems

By far, no manufacturer has had so many reports of dangerous electrical problems as Lasko. Customers report that the Lasko unit blows the electrical socket or trips the circuit breaker; this happens numerous times on different outlets. The plug on Lasko space heaters can become very hot to the touch while the unit is in operation, and in some cases, the plastic part of the plug has been known to actually melt to the wall outlet or power strip. Some customers have reported electrical malfunctions and that the Lasko units are inherently unreliable due to problems with the electrical system.

These units may seem like good value, but there are many disadvantages of Lasko heaters to keep in mind. They are lightweight and attractively designed, and they offer features such as a remote control and digital control panel that make the heaters seem like a wonderful purchase. Unfortunately, Lasko has focused on design and quiet operation over efficiency and safety. Lasko heaters should not be left to run unattended due to the risk of electrical fire from the outlets and the risk of fire from the heater tipping over.
